The Old Fence and the Golden Light
4”x6”
Acrylic on Canvas Board
As I walked further into the woods, off the hiking trail, I spotted an old log fence. It looked like it had been there a long, long time, slowly sinking into the forest and there was a golden, heavenly quality to the woods beyond. However, when I walked up to the fence, at close range the forest on the other side looked similar to where I was standing now. Its golden beauty had been more atmosphere than substance. Where I stood now was equally lovely.
Sometimes in life it feels like “everyone else” I know has got it together and are coping and thriving… that on their side of the fence their lives are bathed in light while I am trying to find those patches of sun in between the shadows, especially during times of setback, doubt and grief.
What if, instead, I could imagine that fence as the edge of a mirror that shows me what gifts I already have, what I can be grateful for, and what is beautiful here where I am, right now? What if that mirror is showing me that I am ready for more if I open myself up bravely to the possibility?
