To cope with fear and uncertainty, I created this painting that expresses a spiritual teaching, paraphrased as, “We cannot avoid all the thorns and thistles in life, but we can wear strong boots.” For me, “strong boots,” that provide protection and resilience while allowing my heart to remain open, include art, meditation, exercise, loving relationships, being of service, and community. Another teaching suggests that life’s thorns sometimes hold hidden gifts, and so I painted these thistles with light and beauty in the hope that a better, kinder world will one day arise in response to what we currently face.
