As serious, reflective child, I was always told to smile more, which bothered me, since I was usually content or happy inside. Trout lily blossoms (dog toothed violets) appear to “look” downwards, almost as if their heads are bowed over in serious contemplation. Nevertheless, they are beautiful and are one of my favorite spring woodland flowers. They are a reminder to me that we all have beauty and worth without having to please others, and that happiness is not an expression on our face, but a state of the heart.
