At least 20 years ago, my family and I had taken the aerial tramway up to the top of Cannon Mountain in New Hampshire. The snow was very, very deep as we walked among the trees.

For me this painting captures a feeling of safety and shelter alongside an excitement to explore and discover – the feeling of being on a beautiful threshold. It also expresses, metaphorically, my discovery that there are gifts in life, both in the shadows and in the light.
