So often, what brings me joy wonder only exists in this world for a small, fleeting magical moment. I was driving home near dusk through the cold winter countryside. The sky was dim and cloudy, darker than the snowy landscape below. All of a sudden, an expanse of field opened up to my left. The sun was a fiery ball, low in the sky.
On an impulse I pulled over, got out of the car into the icy wind and crossed the street to take some photos. After, as I continued home, the sun disappeared within a few minutes. It had been a brief interlude, but one of immense beauty. I felt heartened, nourished, in awe.
The title of this piece came later, when the painting was purchased by a collector for a grieving friend.
“Know that even when obscured by the clouds, the sun of your father’s love is always with you. May his loving legacy bring beauty to the landscape of your life and shine a light for your footsteps forward. And may a feeling of his lasting presence bring your heart comfort and peace."
